You are like David! A shepherd boy whose heart God saw and God, therefore decided to make great. You are like David, a humble nobody God has lifted high and exalted. You are the anointed one of God. Chosen out of many. Highly favored and blessed and honored.
God has given you a Kingdom and he has blessed you with abundance. You prayed to God and he answered you. You prayed to God and he slew your enemies. You remember the time you faced the fearsome Goliath and you defeated him. You have conquered the greatest. You are battle hardened. Tough. Strong. Resilient. You have now become a mighty warrior and King. You are highly exalted and praised.
Your relationship with your family, friends, co-workers, community and the world is wonderful. All your life, God has been answering your prayers and meeting all your needs. God has been giving you Victory after victory, after victory. You asked for a job and God gave you two. You asked for a wonderful, supportive spouse and God gave you that. You asked for awesome, healthy, well disciplined, hardworking and intelligent children and God gave you that.
God gave you a house.
God gave you property and land.
God gave you wealth.
God gave you health.
God gave you businesses.
God gave you a career.
God gave you beauty.
God gave you brains and intelligence and wisdom.
God has been amazing and awesome to you.
But as for you, you forgot. Yes, like David,
You forgot that there is no arrival in this life.
You forgot that you have a prowling and very dangerous enemy.
You forgot that you are still human with flesh, blood, and bones.
You forgot who God is.
You forgot who you were before God got you.
You forgot that warriors fight to the end.
You thought happiness came cheap.
You thought Victory comes without a fight.
You thought miracles and fantasies just happen.
You thought money grew on trees.
You thought rain and sunshine just magically happen.
You grew comfortable.
You grew lazy.
You grew prideful.
You grew horns.
And started taking everything and everyone for granted. And so, instead of being alert and vigilant and awake like a warrior, you went to slumber and sleep. Well, that is until the enemy came knocking on your door.
And your world started falling apart.
And things stopped making sense.
And you couldn’t distinguish between truth and lies.
And the lines in your life were so blurred you couldn’t see clearly anymore.
And everywhere you turned, you felt you were backed into a corner.
And every second felt like hell on earth.
And some days you felt so defeated you didn’t want to live.
Yes, the enemy came!
Just when you thought you were battle hardened and bullet proof.
Just when you thought nothing could get to you because you had seen it all.
Just when you thought you could beat anything and conquer.
Just when you thought you could survive everything.
But the enemy had been studying you for a while. The enemy had made a dangerous battle plan for you. The enemy already knew where your Achilles’ heel was. The enemy was ready for you. Or so he thought.
So, instead of hurting you, he started going after the people and things you loved. He didn’t come for your life this time, no! He started using the people and things you love to torment you and cause you suffering and anguish. See, you are like David.
The Lord gave you a family, children, friends and blessings but now, the enemy has decided to use those very same things against you. Instead of entering into you, he found you had the full of armor of God on, so he entered your family, children, and friends.
Your son Amnon wanted to sleep with his sister Tamar. The lust in his heart finally caused him to commit rape and incest. Your once perfect family has now become dysfunctional and messed up and full of turmoil.
And just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse, it keeps getting even more tumultuous. Now your beautiful, disciplined daughter Tamar is disgraced and hurting having lost her virginity. She has incurred trauma and wounds she will have to live with for the rest of her life. Your son Amnon after raping her now hates her guts. Your other son Absalom decides to avenge his sister’s honor by killing Amnon.
Yes, my dear friend. Just when you thought life couldn’t get any harder, it does. And now, you have lost one of your children to a murder. One son killed by the other son. There is incest, rape and now murder in the family tree. The dysfunction just seems to be getting worse and worse. The rain won’t let up and you have no umbrella.
The torrent is hitting you so hard, some days you feel like you are suffocating and you can’t breathe. The mess is getting uglier and uglier and nastier. The dominoes are falling at an alarming rate and you can’t stop them. You even start to falsely think that because you are now down on the floor and licking your sticking wounds with your head bowed, the enemy will relent and give you rest. But the enemy isn’t even done with you.
You have been sleeping too long and he just got started with you.
You start getting confused.
You start to question everything.
You start to question yourself.
You start to look deep into your soul.
You start questioning God.
You start questioning your Faith.
Sometimes you are even tempted to think God has gone to sleep or he doesn’t exist anymore. How could this great and awesome God let such terrible things happen to you? But the enemy is not relenting. He wants to beat you down and he wants to beat you hard.
Your Son Absalom now runs away from home because he feels guilty for killing his brother and he is afraid you will kill him too. You are so distraught and unhappy. Your life just keeps falling apart more and more.
Nothing you do is able to fix the gushing wound. The blood just keeps pouring forth, draining the life of you. So, because you still want your life to make sense, and because you are trying to fix the dam despite it being broken, you forgive you son and call him back home.
You just lost a son. You don’t want to lose another child. Therefore despite his imperfections and sins, you forgive him and restore him. You now falsely think that you will finally know rest. Because you have done a good thing. You have forgiven and behaved well and done what God expects of you. Yes, you mistakenly think that all will be well finally.
Your Kingdom and family and life will know peace and now you can finally enjoy your life. But you really have no idea who your enemy is. This enemy you fight is relentless. This enemy you fight was already defeated but he just won’t accept defeat and every good thing you do just pisses him off further.
So guess what? All the good deeds you have been doing just enraged him. See how you angered him more. You stood your ground. Despite your questions and doubts, you did not forsake God. You still trust in God and his power. You are still a believer. You still pray. You still worship God. Now, more than ever.
The devil thought he had defeated you. The devil thought he had won. But your God stood by you. So, he is not happy at all. He is furious, enraged and embittered. Like a caged mad bull. He is ready to charge at anything red and unfamiliar. So, he comes back to get you.
Your beloved and forgiven son Absalom turns against you. He wants your kingdom and throne. Just when you thought you knew betrayal. Your own son, flesh, and blood goes and publicly betrays you. After everything, you have given him. After everything, you have done for him. After everything, the person you didn’t think would ever turn their back on you, because they owe you so much, goes and does just that.
They betray your trust and honour and love and everything. They stab you in the door and turn the blade slowly as they watch you squirm in pain and anguish. Absalom wages war against you. He turns almost everyone against you. Your other family members, your friends, your co-workers.
Using lies and deception and trickery and now people hate you. As if that is not enough, he arranges an army to attack you. Because you have grown weak and old and tired, You don’t fight as swift as you did in the past. You have grown slower. So, you flee.
Out of fear and dread, you flee. And as you flee and run, you cry out to your God. You beg him to spare your life. You cry out to him for another victory and chance. In desperation, you run to the one safe place you know.
You run to the one person who has never let you down. You run to your strong tower. Your redeemer and savior. You run to God. And the Lord is faithful. He hears your cries. He defeats your enemies. Once again, you conquer. Once again you triumph. Because you put your trust in the one true God. The maker of heaven and earth.
God shows up and makes you triumphant. And in the end, you die a peaceful man. With your Kingdom restored to you. And you leave your Kingdom in the hands of your wise Son Solomon.
During your life and even in death, you are remembered as the greatest King of Israel and Judah. And from your lineage, the messiah and Jesus Christ our savior is ascended and lifted high. He is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. He reigns over all.
Isn’t it a beautiful, most glorious thing to serve and hold onto the Lord. During storms, hardships, tribulations, temptations and battles? Brethren, friends, brothers and sisters, are you going through a trial, tribulation, hardship, battle, temptation, storm? Has the enemy attacked your life, your health, your family, your children, your destiny, your blessings, your finances, your business? Is the enemy after you? Hitting you? Causing you to lose faith, hope, and love?
Don’t give up just yet.
Wait on the Lord.
Keep trusting God.
The same God who helped you conquer before is alive and mighty. He is resurrected, seated on the right hand of the Father. Our savior and redeemer is victorious in Battle. Our Savior always wins. He never loses any war.So, hold steadfast.
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.Romans 8:28
And remember we don’t wrestle against flesh and blood. We don’t fight people. We fight dark forces and principalities and spiritual enemies in the heavenly places. We fight enemies that are often invisible and unseen.
“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”Ephesians 6:12
And that’s why seeing and knowing where they will attack from can be very complicated and difficult. But we have an all seeing, all knowing, every present God. A God who sees and know everything. We have God fighting for us. We have God on our side. Kicking butts and winning us victories. We have Jesus for us. Holding us.
Jesus who told us before he was scorned, beaten, lashed, disgraced and crucified that we would have many troubles in the world but we should take heart because he had conquered the world.
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”John 16:33
Jesus isn’t on the cross anymore. He is resurrected and alive and powerful and mightier. Take heart! God is fighting for you. Keep praying. Keep worshipping. Keep honoring him. The same God who gave you the good. Is the same God who will turn your bad into good.
