I recently wrote an article titled, “Who do you dress for?” After writing the article, I shared it with one of my friends. Her first response after reading my piece was, “Hannah, where do you expect Christian Women to get fashionable clothes from? Everything being produced these days is designed to cater to secular tastes. Yes, I want to dress appropriately in a way that please’s God but I also want to look trendy, fashionable and stylish while doing it. I don’t want to be know as the ‘frumpy Christian woman’ who has a boring sense of style.”

I heartily laughed at her comments. And it was her comments that led me on search for fashionable, classy, trendy, stylish, clothes for Christian and godly women. I believe Christian Women can be fashionable, trendy, stylish and decent all at once. One doesn’t need to show their thighs, buttocks, breasts, cleavage etc to look attractive, classy, elegant, chic and smart.

This is going to be a series where I write on Asian Inspired designs, African Inspired designs, European and Western Inspired designs, Accessories, Shoes and anything else to show that the Christian women of our times, no matter their age can dress fashionably and still please God at the same time. You don’t need to give in to secular influences to look great. If you missed some of the articles in this series, you can catch up by clicking the links below.

I desire therefore that the men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting; 9 in like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing, 10 but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works.

Who do you dress for?

“I dress for the image. Not for myself, not for the public, not for fashion, not for men.”

Marlene Dietrich

So as Google celebrate’s the birth of the German Singer and Actress, Marie Magdalene “Marlene” Dietrich who was born on December 27, 1901, I came across the above quote by her which led to the question.

Who do you dress for?

As a Christian Man or Woman, when you dress up, who is on your mind, heart and soul?
Are you dressing for the glory of Jesus?
Are you dressing for your spouse?
Are you dressing for your friends?
Are you dressing for the public?
Are you dressing for yourself?
Are you dressing for a crush?

Who do you dress for?

Fashions keep changing and becoming more Liberal. Our world has grown so generous with the amount of flesh people can show in public without causing shockwaves escalating. If we keep going at this rate, soon people will be able to move naked on the streets with no qualms. With all the images that keep flooding the internet, televisions, magazines, the streets, the malls, slowly by slowly we are being conditioned to accept generous shows of flesh and skin. However just because the world accepts this doesn’t mean it is the kind of standard that Christians should be following.

I recently opened my Opera browser page and I was flooded by a barrage of images. They have a column for trending news where they show all sorts of news stories. I wish they could change their settings to allow an individual choose what shows up on their feed as some of the things they show are not acceptable to everyone using their browser.

As believers we should not forget who we belong to and who we should be dressing for. This goes for both men and women as more men go shirtless.

Let your dressing glorify Jesus. Don’t dress for anyone but Jesus. Before you adorn yourself with anything, ask yourself, if I was to meet Jesus, would he cringe or would he be comfortable and happy seeing me in this outfit?

Jesus looks at both the internal and external. Don’t be deceived that he only looks inwards and ignores what is outside. When God was choosing the first King of Israel Saul, he did consider the outside.

And he had a choice and handsome son whose name was Saul. There was not a more handsome person than he among the children of Israel. From his shoulders upward he was taller than any of the people.
1 Samuel 9:2

Apostle Peter has a few words of wisdom for godly women:

Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear— 4 but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious.
1 Peter 3:3-4

Apostle Paul, goes further to speak wisdom to both men and women.

1 Timothy 2:8-10

I pray that if you are ever asked the question: “Who do you dress for?” you will answer, “I dress for Jesus and his glory.”
