First, I should comment on the Name of the fire, “Thomas Fire”. It reminds me of Biblical Thomas who doubted the resurrection of Jesus Christ and had to first see before he believed.
I don’t know why the Authorities chose to call the fire Thomas but could it be a spiritual hint telling us something about the doubting attitude of people these days concerning Prophesy, the Word of God and Jesus Christ?
27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”
28 Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”
29 Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
Just after reading news of the fires, the spirit of the Lord led me to the Biblical book of Amos: Reading the Passage made me feel chilled.
Could what the Prophet Amos wrote decades ago be what is happening in California today I questioned myself. After all it’s winter and yet the fires keep raging like it was the heat of summer.
It’s not that California doesn’t get fires. It does get fires. What makes Thomas fire different is it’s intensity, magnitude and how long it has persisted. For one reason or another, it’s relentless.
CNN calls the Thomas Fire, the Largest wildfire in California’s Modern History.
“Strong wind blows embers from smoldering trees at the Thomas Fire last week in Montecito, California. (CNN)The Thomas Fire is now the largest wildfire in California’s modern history after torching 273,400 acres. The blaze has surpassed the size of the Cedar Fire near San Diego, which destroyed 273,246 acres”
Anyhow, let’s take a look at the scripture in Amos:
12 Thus says the Lord:
“As a shepherd takes from the mouth of a lion
Two legs or a piece of an ear,
So shall the children of Israel be taken out
Who dwell in Samaria—
In the corner of a bed and on the edge of a couch!
13 Hear and testify against the house of Jacob,”
Says the Lord God, the God of hosts,
14 “That in the day I punish Israel for their transgressions,
I will also visit destruction on the altars of Bethel;
And the horns of the altar shall be cut off
And fall to the ground.
15 I will destroy the winter house along with the summer house;
The houses of ivory shall perish,
And the great houses shall have an end,”
Says the Lord.
As I contemplated Amos’s words further, I was reminded of a Prophet that Gitardood Weblog recently recommended. She is called Lois Vogel Sharp and she is a deeply spiritual woman with profound insights. I remember her saying somethings about the devastation that is going to come to California. You can watch her Video here to better understand what she predicted could happen in days to come.
LA times reports about how much devastation the Fire has caused in the lives of people living in places where it has raged and roared like a Lion.
“Large stretches of southern California now lie in ruins. In some cases, the fire spread so fast that terrified residents were forced to evacuate without their possessions in the dead of night as smoke surrounded their homes.
“I feel like I’m spinning,” local resident Jeff Jacobson, whose house was mostly burned, told the L.A. Times. “I’m overwhelmed and stressed, which is hard because I need to be clear-minded.”
And Amos Continues to say:
4 Will a lion roar in the forest, when he has no prey?
Will a young lion cry out of his den, if he has caught nothing?
5 Will a bird fall into a snare on the earth, where there is no trap for it?
Will a snare spring up from the earth, if it has caught nothing at all?
6 If a trumpet is blown in a city, will not the people be afraid?
If there is calamity in a city, will not the Lord have done it?
I know that sometimes it’s easier to be a Thomas and to doubt unless the evidence is presented.
I know to many people the coming back of Jesus seems like a far fetched idea and many are blind to the signs of the end times.
But, could God be telling us something through his Prophets?
Could the News by these Media Houses be just the Evidence that will turn many a doubting Thomas into a believing Thomas?
Surely the Lord God does nothing,
Unless He reveals His secret to His servants the prophets.
8 A lion has roared!
Who will not fear?
The Lord God has spoken!
Who can but prophesy?
